Avec St. Dominic's Preview, paru en 1972, Van Morrison revenait au dépouillement acoustique du chef-d'oeuvre Astral Weeks. Qu'il s'agisse de la chanson-titre (marquée par le gospel), du très rhythm'n'blues "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)", dédié au pionnier de la soul Jackie Wilson, ou des longues fresques introspectives "Listen To The Lion" et "Almost Independance Day", tout concourt à faire de St. Dominic's Preview, au demeurant produit par Ted Templeman (Doobie Brothers), l'une des oeuvres essentielles de la période "américaine" de Morrison. Un chanteur dont la voix garde aujourd'hui encore toute sa force émotionnelle. (Philippe Margotin)
