Il rencontre le groupe The Meters qui officie derrière les artistes-maison, et travaille à leurs productions dès 1969, celles-ci comprenant certains des meilleurs albums funk instrumentaux des années 1970. En 1971, Allen Toussaint reprend sa carrière solo avec l'album Toussaint pour le label Scepter (retitré From a Whisper to a Scream suite au succès du morceau). L'année suivante, il signe Live, Love and Faith
